Landmark LITMUS Studies Reinforce the Role of FibroScan® in Non-Invasive Liver Disease Assessment

Two major publications advance evidence supporting non-invasive pathways for MASLD and MASH

The management of chronic liver disease is undergoing a profound transformation. As the prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) continues to rise globally and new therapeutic options emerge, the need for accurate, accessible, and patient-friendly diagnostic tools has never been greater.

In this context, the recent publication of two landmark studies from the LITMUS (Liver Investigation: Testing Marker Utility in Steatohepatitis) consortium represents a significant milestone for the hepatology community.

Published in The Lancet and Nature Medicine, these studies provide one of the most comprehensive evaluations to date of non-invasive tests (NITs) used to assess liver disease severity and identify patients at risk of advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis.

The largest international evaluation of non-invasive liver tests

Bringing together leading academic institutions, healthcare organizations, and industry partners, the LITMUS programme was designed to address a critical challenge in liver care: how to improve patient identification and risk stratification while reducing dependence on invasive procedures such as liver biopsy.

The studies assessed a broad range of blood-based biomarkers and imaging technologies across large, characterized patient populations, generating robust evidence to support the integration of non-invasive tools into clinical pathways.

Reinforcing the clinical value of FibroScan®

Among the technologies evaluated, FibroScan® demonstrated strong performance in assessing liver disease severity and identifying patients with advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis.

The findings further support the role VCTE, the technology behind FibroScan®, as a key component of non-invasive liver assessment strategies.

Importantly, the research highlights the value of combining simple blood-based biomarkers with FibroScan® measurements to optimize patient stratification, improve referral decisions, and support more efficient care pathways.

These approaches can help healthcare professionals identify at-risk patients earlier while minimizing the need for invasive diagnostic procedures.

Supporting the future of liver care

The growing burden of liver disease presents significant challenges for healthcare systems worldwide. As treatment options continue to expand, clinicians need scalable and reliable tools that can help identify the right patients, at the right stage of disease, and at the right time.

The LITMUS findings contribute to a growing body of evidence supporting the adoption of non-invasive approaches as part of routine clinical practice, helping make liver disease assessment more accessible, efficient, and patient-centered.

Congratulations to the LITMUS consortium

Echosens would like to congratulate all investigators, research teams, clinical centers, and partners involved in the LITMUS programme for this remarkable achievement.

Their collaborative efforts have generated valuable scientific evidence that will help shape the future of liver disease diagnosis and management.

As a contributor to this important initiative, Echosens is proud to support the advancement of evidence-based, non-invasive solutions that improve liver health worldwide.
